Gabriella loscos - Apprenticeship

In August of 2021, I was working as a Millwork associate at a Lowe's in Louisville Colorado. While in this position, I encountered several contractors who were looking to take on an apprentice to help them with the amount of work they were receiving.

A local independent contractor had asked me personally to join him. I began working for him in the Fall of 2021, and worked alongside him as his only employee for a year. He is skilled in interior contracting, interior painting, home demos, remodels, exterior painting, landscaping, and some electrical work.

In this position, we traveled to different clients' homes throughout Colorado, including Boulder, Denver, Greeley, and Westminster. I was taught proper techniques on the set up and clean up of projects including taping for painting, disposing properly of material, cleaning tools efficiently, draping plastic sheeting and general cleaning procedures.

Over time, I became comfortable and skilled using several different power tools, general contracting tools, and interior painting. This position allowed me to gain valuable work experience not only as an apprentice, but as an artist. Taking on a position as a contractor at 20 years old has significantly pushed my own concept of 3D art and what materials I have access to in order to create something amazing.

This project took approximately 2 weeks of work. Trained in using power tools in an outdoor setting. Finishing the exterior of a chicken coup for a client. Learned how to cut pieces of wood using a table saw and hang with a nail gun. Completed project by painting a dark brown finish and seal.

This remodel was done over the course of a few months. We started with the kitchen, removed existing cabinetry and repainted them. We installed new hardware on the cabinets and kitchen features. The entire room including the ceiling was repainted, new furniture was placed inside, and a granite counter was installed for the kitchen countertop/sink. The flooring was pulled up and retiled. In the other rooms of the house, we repainted walls and doors. All lighting fixtures throughout the house were replaced with new, modern ones.

The client of this project had recently moved into a new home, requesting the walls in every upstairs and downstairs room be painted. In this project, we also removed and installed new flooring on the first floor of the house, installed a granite kitchen counter, and remodeled the basement.

The final project I helped work on before completing my year as an apprentice were two bathroom remodels at a house in Boulder. The flooring of both were completely removed and replaced with new tile. We took apart the shower bases and doors, eventually removed all bathroom wall tile. This tile was replaced as well. Toilets, cabinets, and vanities were replaced with new ones. Plumbing was rereouted to accomodate a new shower design. Doors were repainted as well as the walls and ceiling.
